Always Let Your Conscience Be Your Guide – A Hypamovers Nightmare Story by Kola Falaiye

Susan, a single mother of two, lived in a housing complex, where she felt she had no privacy. Every day, she felt she was the subject of murmurs by her neighbours; believed she was discriminated against for being a single parent. One morning, she decided to end the constant humiliation and move to a more private housing estate.

Susan confided in her cousin, David about her plans to move and he was so pleased with the news and he offered to help move her things to the new apartment. Susan had initially planned to get professional movers and tried to explain the benefits of using one. David didn’t buy the idea and advised her not to waste her money since he had a bus that could move all her things at once. “Cuz, instead of paying big amount of money to move from Ketu to Opebi, just fill up my tank; it has been a while since my bus had some fuel in it”, David said jokingly and they both had a laugh. Unwilling to hurt David’s feelings, Susan agreed and gave him some fuel money to fill up the tank of the bus.

The day of the move finally came and Susan was so excited to move out. David arrived on time with two men to help with the packing and loading. The men however were illiterate and did not speak English very well. As she tried communicating with them, she found it hard to get them to follow her instructions and this made her feel very uncomfortable. David assured her that they were capable and that moving her things was not a big deal. Eventually, they packed all her things into the bus, and as she left her old neighbourhood, driving behind the bus, she gave a sigh of relief and she felt she had regained her privacy. She felt she had a lot to look forward to.

They arrived at her new home with just enough time to unload the items off the bus. She opened the door and to her dismay, couldn’t believe what she saw. The entire floor of the bus was filled with broken glass and china. Apparently, due to the lack of proper understanding, the helpers improperly loaded the bus with boxes labeled “Fragile” stacked under very heavy furniture. With most of her glass cups, china and ornaments destroyed, Susan couldn’t help the tears from falling and regretted going along with David’s plan and not hiring a professional moving company that would have been accountable. “Now, replacing all that was damaged would be equivalent, if not more than hiring a professional”, Susan exclaimed! “Oh how I wish I had followed my instincts!”
