Great Schools You Need To Know On the Island

In today’s #HypamoversYouNeedToKnow we’ll be sharing information on great schools on the Island (we think) you need to know. Though there are many great schools in many areas of the Lagos Island, we’ll focus on fHive areas/neighbourhoods: Ikoyi, Victoria Island, Lekki, Ajah and Epe.

 

IKOYI

Is arguably the most affluent neighborhood of Lagos and located in the Eti-Osa local government area. Popular with upper class residents of Nigerian society. Ikoyi hosts some of the wealthiest community within Lagos state. Ikoyi is home to great schools like:

 

• Brownville College Ikoyi (est. 1998): A unique establishment with a distinguished tradition in secondary, co-educational day and boarding school education for students aged 10-17. It is located in the prestigious Park View Estate.

• Kings College (est. 1909): A foremost Nigerian institution, this secondary school has a rich history and pedigree of prominent individuals as alumni. The school is located just in Lagos Island with an annex campus in Victoria Island.

• St. Gregory College (est. 1928): Another renowned institution founded by Catholic missionaries, and located in South West Ikoyi, St. Gregs (as it’s fondly referred) has produced many distinguished gentlemen.

• Corona School Ikoyi (est. 1960). A member of the prestigious Trust Council of schools. Corona has a rich history and reputation in moral instruction.

• Lagos Preparatory School (est. 2002). With a focus on the English National Curriculum, LPS offers an impressive academic curriculum and extracurricular programs for students from 18 months to 17 years.

 

Other notable schools include: Greenwood House School, Corporate Kids Academy, Aunty Ayo Comprehensive School etc.

 

VICTORIA ISLAND

Popularly known as VI , this is a major commercial hub, which has its roots as a an affluent residential area in Lagos. It hosts major large organizations and is also the centre of nightlife on the island. Some great schools in VI are:

 

• Crescent Schools (est. 1997): Situated in the 1004 Housing Estate, the institution offers a balanced education, well rooted in Islamic etiquettes.

• Lycee Francais Louis Pasteur de Lagos (est. 1966): This popular French international school offers unique educational programs from pre-school to grade 12.

• ADRAO International School (est. 1963): A private institution with a rich curriculum influenced by French, British and American education standard. This renowned school is located on Ahmadu Bello Way.

• American International School Lagos (est. 1963). This institution offers a curriculum based on the AERO Common Core Standards with focus on the sciences and technology. The school is located in the 1004 Housing Estate.

 

Other notable schools include: Corona School, Victoria Island, Baby Ville Child Care Centre, Little Acorns Montessori School, etc.

 

LEKKI

Is located to the eastern part of Lagos city. It is a naturally formed peninsula and its notable neighborhoods include Lekki Phase 1 and 2, through to the Chevron Area. It comprises a host of large luxury housing estates and communities. Lekki also hosts many great school, some of which are:

 

• MeadowHall School (est. 2002): Highly regarded, this institution offers a blend of the British and Nigerian curricula for students from nursery through secondary education. It is located just off the Lekki-Epe Expressway.

• Dowen College (est. 1990): Is an independent secondary school offering co-educational boarding and day school for children aged 11-18.Locatedin Lekki Phase I, Dowen offers a broad and balanced curriculum within a friendly, caring and happy environment.

• Lekki British International School (est. 2000): Situated on a 25 arce campus (with boarding facilities) in Lekki Phase I, this institution offers a British curriculum for primary and secondary education, as well as A-Level programs.

• Children’s International School (est. CIS also offers a curricular for junior and senior education based on the Nattional Curriculum of England. In addition to its academic program, CIS also boasts a rich extracurricular program for its students

 

Other notable schools include: British International School, Children’s International School, Infantino Montessori school, Rock Montessori school, Troika Bilingual School, Laura Stephens School etc.

 

AJAH

A popular suburb along the Lekki-Epe Expressway and the shores of the Lagos Lagoon, Ajah is a great area to live and raise a family. Cost of living in Ajah is fairly affordable especially when you consider perks like having access to local markets, decent restaurants, schools and entertainment, all with and relatively steady power supply. It is also rich with handymen and skilled residents whose presence makes living cost-effective. Some distinguished schools in and around Ajah are:

 

• Greater Scholars International School: Starting out as a day care center at the Abraham Adesanya Estate, the institution now offers nursery, primary and secondary school programs based on an international school curriculum, but infusing practices from the American style of education.

• Olowu Community Senior Secondary School (est. Oct 2010): Provides education based on a sense of belonging, creating a culture of leadership skills and providing conducive learning environment that will enable the students to achieve their potentials maximally. It is located beside Ajah market.

• Debirrus Schools (est. Sept 2000): With a focus on the National curriculum of England and Wales, Debirrus Schools offer programs for nursery through high school as well as a developed sports program. It is located in the Lambassa

• Caleb British International Schools (est. July 1986): CBIS is a privately owned, Christian secondary school located in the Abijo GRA area and spread over a large campus. The institution has adopted a blend of Nigerian and Birtish curricula, and also offers boarding facilities..

 

Other notable schools in Ajah include Olowu Community Secondary School, Genesis Schools, and the Almond school.

 

EPE

An historic town and local government area in the eastern part of Lagos state, Epe is situated at the bank of the Lagos Lagoon. The town is very faous for its fishing communities and quite recently, a growing hospitality industry. Great schools in Epe and its environs include:

 

• Atlantic Hall school (est. 1989): Atlantic hall is a co-educational full-boarding secondary school committed to providing a well-rounded education. It offers a dual curriculum pathway to teach the Nigerian and international (IGCSE) programme.

• Neander International School (est. 2006): Located on the outskirts of Epe,  Neader is a purpose built, full boarding  secondary school, offering students a blend of curricula in preparation for IGCSE, WASSCE and the American SAT examinations.

• Edidot School (est. 2006): A Christian institution offering programs for nursery, primary and secondary school students. Its Awoyaya campus offers a combined American, British and Nigerian curriculum that will enable a child to function in the international world.

 

Other notable schools in the Epe area are Greensprings School, Corona School, and the LivingSprings School.
