Pedro recently got a job transfer from Port Harcourt to Lagos and was initially provided accommodation by his employer, a multinational firm. Though he enjoyed the perks of subsidized housing at first, he wasn’t too thrilled with the location and decided he would move to a more befitting neighbourhood a few months later.
Pedro found his perfect place in an upscale neighbourhood, and in a housing complex where, as he had heard, a lot of influential people also called home. He hired the right agent, who was able to secure an apartment for him and Pedro was off to the races preparing for his move.
On the day of the move, Pedro hired professionals to move his things. The moving van, however, arrived later than expected and coupled with the fact that Pedro was not as organized as he should have been, the moving process was set back a couple of hours.
The activities and the pickup location was smooth, and the movers were able to get to his new place late in the afternoon. This raised concerns from the security detail at the housing complex, and Pedro was warned that he had just a couple of hours to unload the truck before other residents returned at the end of their day. Undeterred, Pedro and the movers proceeded to move his items into the house as he felt the little inconvenience of a new neighbour could be overlooked.
While the truck was being unloaded, a lot of the residents returned as expected, many of whom were not too thrilled with the presence of a moving van in the complex that late. By the time the movers were done, they realized that the truck had been blocked by a sea of vehicles, which prevented the truck from leaving.
Pedro was upset and tried to get the security personnels to contact some residents to help re-park their cars, but they had clear instructions not to bother any of the “residents”; some even feared for their jobs if they attempted to contact Pedro’s neighbours if the directive was not followed. The movers, on the other had were growing impatient and insisted that Pedro resolve the situation or be charged for the extra hours. Pedro, even made attempts to ring the door bells of some of his neighbours and he was completely ignored.
After many hours, of being ignored, the movers charged Pedro for keeping the moving van overnight and was also made to be responsible for the security of the vehicle. The next day, he faced a barrage of complaints and ridicule from the residents and was deeply embarrassed. He had gotten off to a very bad start with his new neighbours, which made him rethink his decision to move into the housing complex in the first place.
