There’s No Such Thing as Cheap and Convenient – A Hypamovers Nightmare Story

Recently, Chioma committed to renting a new apartment and intended to move her personal effects in a way that was cheap and most convenient for her. Unfortunately, she held out until the last minute without making any arrangements. On her intended move date, she contacted friends and family for help but to her dismay, no one was available at such short notice. She had no choice but to seek out a mover by searching online. During her search, she found a firm that seemed credible and decided to contact them to see if they could help her out of her predicament.

“Yes we can help!” said the representative of the moving company. “We do however require a quick assessment of your home and items. It is highly recommended to ensure that we can help you in the best possible way as your request is very late.” Still bent of moving as cheaply as possible, Chioma decided to challenge the necessity of the assessment. “An assessment is not necessary O! I just have a few items and furniture to relocate,” she insisted. “Besides, I have done a lot of packing (into Ghana-Must-Go bags) and there is little for your movers to do.”

Knowing full well what the challenges of a home relocation may be, the moving company representative tried to get as much information from Chioma about her inventory and logistical constraints that could impact the success of the move. He devised a plan for the engagement but stipulated that any additional requests that fall outside the scope of work, as agreed to, will attract extra charges to Chioma. Sure of herself, she agreed to the terms of the moving company and the job was scheduled to commence immediately. As they suspected, upon arrival the moving company realized there was more to be done than disclosed.

First, Chioma had failed to take full stock of her items, which suggested that the moving vehicle specified for the engagement was not large enough. This meant that multiple trips and efforts to load and unload the truck were inevitable, which clearly warranted additional charges. Secondly, Chioma realized she needed additional storage materials to complete her packing. Fortunately, the movers anticipated for this need and provided her with some complimentary boxes, as well as extras for purchase. Thirdly, the move was abruptly stalled by the security personnel in her estate because Chioma was unaware of the proper procedure required to move her property out of the estate. Chioma’s moving experience quickly became a nightmare simply due to the fact that she did not provide ample time to plan her move. She ended up having to pay a lot more to the professional moving company for an additional day of services and overnight storage fees to keep her items secure. More importantly, she lost a lot of time.

The most important part of a move is planning, which you can do yourself or request a plan from professional movers. The mishaps Chioma experienced would have been properly managed by the professional movers if she had agreed to an assessment whereby logistical constraints would have been explored and addressed. Reliable moving companies are adept at helping you with your move plan, which is typically a by-product of an assessment of all your items and the logistics surrounding the move. Be sure to request for one if you are planning to make a move.
