The Switch-a-roo! – A Hypamovers Nightmare Story

Segun was moving into his very first apartment, a big feat as this was the first time he would be living away from his family. After three years in the workforce, he could finally afford a place of his own in the heart of Lekki. To celebrate this achievement, he intended to host a housewarming party in his new apartment. In order to cut costs and keep aside some money for his bash, he decided against hiring professional movers and moved to his new place alone. Will he make it? Let’s find out!

A day before the move, Segun drove around a busy Lekki expressway and found a blue road side truck which he could hire. He made arrangements with the ‘supposed’ owner of the truck and they agreed to meet up at his parents’ place very early the following day on the mainland in Lagos.

The next day, he got up early to pack up the final boxes and bags, and waited for the movers to come. He made a call to the owner of the truck, who picked up and said he was already on his way. After waiting an hour with no truck in sight, he called again, spoke to the person on the other end who said he was 5 minutes away and that Segun should be on the lookout.

After another half hour of waiting, Segun called again only to be replied by a busy dial tone. Frustrated and not knowing what else to do, he starts to send strongly worded text messages to the truck owners’ phone. An hour later he received a call from the truck owner who said he was almost there. Segun proffers a few more insults at the truck driver and drops the call. Furious and frustrated, he finally sees the blue truck on his street. The truck pulls up to the front of his parents’ house and asks for him.

Segun was confused because he could not recognize the man in the truck (nor the truck sitting in front of his parent’s home), which by the way was much smaller than what he had bargained for. After a brief verbal tirade, he was made to understand that the truck owner had never been on his way but was stringing him along while looking for someone to subcontract the engagement to.

Segun was completely overwhelmed as he not only lost a lot of time, he also had to either look for other movers or work through the debacle he got himself into. What a mess! Segun quickly learned the lesson, penny wise- pound foolish.
